Canaan was opened in November 1979 with the support of local Christians and churches. The trust (today a charitable company limited by guarantee) was called Canaan (land of promise) as we sensed that The Lord had responded to the prayers of many before us and had brought the work into being. Since then, we have known God’s provision and faithfulness over the years as the vision and work has steadily grown from a Christian bookshop / counselling centre into a resource centre which serves the church and community in many ways:
We carry a large stock of Christian Books, Bibles, CDs, Videos, Computer Software, Cards and gifts. We also have a coffee lounge for drinks and cakes available for our customers and a counselling room where we offer both professional Christian counselling or prayer and a listening service to any requiring it.
We are blessed with a small team of professionally trained counsellors who provide private counselling. Individual clients are seen by appointment. There is a charge for this service based upon the income and means of the individual. Our counsellors are also available to help churches run training courses on counselling issues.
A regular prayer meeting is held in Canaan on the first Tuesday of every month, 09.00 – 10.00 and the first Friday of every month, 17:00 – 18:00. We are happy to pray for individual needs at any time. We also accept private prayer requests online.
We have over the years organised joint celebration meetings and author events to bring the churches in the area together.
Many people come to us for information regarding churches and events. We have a notice board for display of leaflets and posters. This website provides an up-to-date directory of local churches.
Retreats and Quiet Days
We have organised and led prayer days and retreats, both locally and in France.
We are represented on our local Churches Together group and in the fraternal for church leaders in the area, which we help to organise and support.
The former director of Canaan Ministries, Andy Gilmour, has visited Ghana on an annual basis since 2012 as the result of an invitation through Canaan. His fruitful ministry includes preaching, teaching, evangelism, mentoring, literature distribution and sponsorship of orphans. More information can be found on his dedicated Facebook page.
